Quantitative MRI of the joints

Osteoarthritis is a leading cause of disability in developed countries. While knee MRI is commonly performed to evaluate structural cartilage and synovium modifications, there is a strong need for imaging markers that are sensitive to early changes induced by the disease, before structural modifications will occur. In early stages, OA is characterized by alterations in collagen and glycosaminoglycan content, which can be measure with quantitative MR. Together with an highly multidisciplinary team, I am investigating the potential of T2 and T1rho quantitative MRI as possible outcome measures in a clinical trial where a personalized modified gait training is tested in painful knee OA. I have also led the development of a distortion-free diffusion MRI method to assess cartilage involvement in children with juvenile idiopathic arthritis. We are also investigating the potential of diffusion MRI to characterize cartilage and synovium biochemistry in knee OA.
